WORDSWORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL

Design & Technology

Design and Technology (DT) at Wordsworth aims to develop resilient, creative learners that can think critically and imaginatively. It will also support their Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural (SMSC) development.

At Wordsworth Primary School we want our children to be passionate about designing and developing aesthetically pleasing and functional products. We intend to prepare children to deal with an ever-changing technological world, encouraging them to become creative and resourceful problem solvers, working both independently and as members of a team. We teach them to be inspired by real world opportunities and relevant problems, identifying needs and developing a range of ideas and solutions in a variety of contexts.

Our curriculum provision aims to provide children with real-life experiences, contexts and design opportunities from EYFS all the way through to Year 6.  At Wordsworth, the children will be offered a range of meaningful experiences which will support and enhance learning across our curriculum. Children will learn skills in product research, disassembling and building products, making prototypes, testing, designing and evaluating.

By the time children reach Year 6, they should be on the way to becoming risk takers and innovators and will have used a range of tools, resources and materials, including the use of IT, to create effectively constructed and aesthetically pleasing results. This, along with a strong focus on the importance of evaluation, gives the children a grounding in how to adapt and improve their work, providing them with a strong foundation for the next step of their learning and a key skill for life.

What you will see in the classrooms:

  • Lessons will have a clear focus, progression and outcome built over a series of lessons
  • Children will develop spiritually as they are encouraged to develop creativity and innovation, which can increase their self-confidence and belief in their abilities. They will learn how to plan and implement a project from beginning to end using the research, design, make and evaluate model
  • Children will be able to clearly articulate their brief and the vocabulary linked to Design and Technology
  • Children will be seen planning using various formats, for example annotated sketches, patterns and templates, prototypes and by communicating ideas verbally. This will allow them to develop morally as they raise questions about the impact of technological change on the world and human life. For example, children can consider the environmental impact of their choices when selecting materials.
  • The children will experience a variety of tools and materials as well as understand their applications. This will develop their cultural understanding as they reflect on the diversity of materials and ways in which design can improve quality of life. Children can also learn about how different cultures have contributed to technology.
  • Children will be encouraged to experiment in a safe environment where their teamwork and problem-solving skills are nurtured, tested and developed. This will help children develop socially by providing opportunities to work collaboratively, recognise others' strengths, and share equipment.
  • Children will learn skills that are transferable to other projects and learning for the future.
